KALSAKA DEPOSIT

Project Location and Access

Kalsaka is a producing gold mine in Burkina Faso operated by Amara Mining. Amara acquired the neighboring Sega project which is due to begin production in 2013.

Kalsaka gold Mine is located in the Yatenga Province, approximately 150km northwest of Ouagadougou the capital city of Burkina Faso. From Ouagadougou, access to the site is via 100 km of paved road and a further 50km of gravel roads to the Mine site.  Sega prospect is located about 20km north of Kalsaka.

Project History

©  Exploration activity at Kalsaka by mining industry commenced in 1998 when Cluff Mining, signed its joint venture agreement with IMAR-B.

© The Kalsaka exploration project was acquired by Cluff Gold from Cluff Mining in 2004.

©  Various exploration works conducted by Cluff Mining throughout 1998-1999 culminated in a feasibility study completed in 2005 by RSG Global and updated in 2006.

© SRK Consulting made a technical review in 2008, based on RSG’s proposed operations plans with updated costs.

© The operation achieved its first gold pour in October 2008 and was fully commissioned in June 2009.

© In February 2012, Cluff Gold announced conditional acquisition of the Sega project from Orezone.

© 01 October 2012 Cluff Gold announces that it has changed its name to Amara Mining plc.

Geology

The Kalsaka licence area is located in the northern portion of the Boromo belt that forms a major Pre-Cambrian aged supracrustal belt. Kalsaka is positioned near to an inflection point where the N-S trending Boromo belt bends into a NE-SW trending belt. The birimian rocks at Kalsaka comprise intermediate to mafic volcanics and volcanosediments, subvolcanic sills, minor felsic tuffs and bedded chert.

The stratigraphic succession at Kalsaka, from oldest to youngest, is as follows:

  •  felsic volcano-sedimentary sequence;
  •  ultramafic flows;
  •  tholeiitic basaltic flows; and
  •  intraflow shale horizons within the tholeiitic basalts.

The whole is intruded by early proterozoic granitoid and late Proterozoic dolerite dykes.

The stratigraphy at Kalsaka is isoclinally folded into a shallow W-SW plunging syncline. The most prominent ore bodies are located within, or associated with, shears located near the fold axis. The dominant movement sense along the shear zones is dextral strike slip with a minor thrusting component.

DEPOSIT TYPES

The mineralization at Kalsaka Hill occurs in two styles related to the shear zones.

–         The zones of shear hosted mineralization

–         The stockwork style mineralization

MINERALIZATION

Gold mineralization is hosted in narrow shear zones that contain thick quartz veins with brecciated margins hosting the highest grades

The zones of shear hosted mineralization are consistent with the regional fabric and are parallel with the synclinal axis with conformable quartz veining within sericite-kaolinite zones.

The stockwork style mineralization is associated with quartz veins or to shear zones margins. It is developed in less deformed, more competent rocks. Where associated with solitary veins these mineralized zones may be developed slightly oblique to the regional fabric.

At K-Zone the mineralization is along the highly deformed contact between the ultramafic rocks and volcano-sedimentary sequences. The mineralization is associated with large quartz veins with intense sericite-fuchsite-carbonate alteration. The veins are slightly offseted by a late high angle fault.

Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve

At 31 December 2012, Kalsaka had an estimated 38,000 ounces of proven and probable reserves, 225,000 ounces of gold in the measured and indicated resources, and 178,000 ounces of gold in the inferred category, in Kalsaka area. In addition the Sega project had 450366 Oz of indicated resources and 147344Oz of Inferred resources to the project.  (Source company web site / press releases).
