BISSA DEPOSIT

Project Location and Access

The Bissa gold deposit is located at 100km at the north of Ouagadougou, the Capital of Burkina Faso and is accessible by a paved road connecting Kongoussi to Ouagadougou. The Bissa group of exploration permits comprises seven contiguous permits. Gougré (Gougre permit) which lies about 7 km south of Bissa is considered to be a supplement to Bissa’s mining operations mine.

The topography of the project area is variable and the deposit is partly located in a flat plain changing to the northeast and southwest to topographic hills, up to 100 meters above the flat area.

The launch of Bissa makes Nord gold the first gold miner operating two mines in Burkina Faso.

Project history

  •  Substantial work on the project area began in 1993 by a joint venture between Faso Etude et Travaux, and Randgold Resources Ltd.
  •  The project was optioned to Newmont Overseas Exploration Ltd. in 1994-1995 and North Ltd in 1996-2000.
  •  Initially, gold mineralization was discovered at Bissa Hill during the 1997-1998 seasons.
  •  In 2001, Delta Gold Ltd. entered into a joint venture agreement with Randgold to explore the properties.
  •  In early 2004, Jilbey Gold Exploration Ltd. optioned the project. Positive exploration results prompted High River, which held a 29% equity interest in Jilbey, to merge with that company in September 2005.
  •  High River Gold completed aggressive exploration drilling which increase progressively the project gold resources.
  •  Nord gold successfully acquired the majority of HRG shares.
  •  January 17, 2013 Nord Gold announces that construction of its Bissa Mine is now complete and gold production has begun.

Geology

The Bissa Gold Project is located within the northeast edge of the Boromo greenstone belt, part of the lower Proterozoic (Birimian) greenstone belts of the West African craton.

In the project area, the dominant geological features consist of the NE trending Sabce shear zone developed in a volcano-sedimentary sequence (comprising mafic to intermediate volcanic and clastic sedimentary rocks)  located along the northwestern margin of the Kogkoundi Granodiorite (an elongated northeast-southwest felsic intrusion) . The contact between the two is characterized by a thin and discontinuous quartz-pebble conglomeratic sub-unit.

All rock units are affected by a strong planar foliation fabric, generally sub-parallel to the general trend of the deformation zone. In the sedimentary rock the foliation fabric is approximately axial planar to a train of open folds plunging to the northeast.

DEPOSIT TYPES

Bissa mineralization is an orogenic gold deposits type, which typically exhibit a strong relationship with regional arrays of major shear zones.

The gold mineralization is associated with organized networks of quartz veins containing subordinate amounts of carbonate, tourmaline, sulphides and native gold. In this deposit the gold is free milling.

Alternatively, the gold is associated with disseminated sulphides in strongly deformed alteration zones.

MINERALISATION

At Bissa, the gold mineralization is associated with disseminated sulphides, sulphide stringers, quartz veining , hydrothermal alteration and quartz breccia bodies developed in highly strained sedimentary and volcanic rocks, sub-parallel to the dominant foliation fabric of the Sabce shear zone.

The main zone of mineralization forms a NE trending tabular body, steeply dipping to the north.

Six principal areas of gold mineralization are recognized:

Bissa Hill, Bissa South Extension, Zone IO, Bissa South west, Zone 51 and Zone 52.

Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves

As at 1st January 2013, the project’s proven and probable reserves (JORC compliant) of gold were estimated at 1,863 koz at 1.74 g/t while measured, indicated and inferred resources (including Gougre) totaled 5,066 koz.  (source company web site / press releases)
